National Heroine Nanny was known as a very courageous and militant leader who hated the system of slavery that existed in Jamaica during her time. Nanny was from the Ashanti tribe in Africa, a powerful group skilled and experienced in the art of warfare, and which held women in very high esteem. She was among several other outstanding women who found slavery an insult of their dignity, and who fought courageously to end the system. Nanny’s strength and capable leadership made her into a force to be reckoned with. She provided inspiration to her people even in the face of severe punishment or the threat of death. For fifty years she led her people and was known as “wise woman” who held on to the customs and culture of her African heritage. She fought a fierce battle against the English, never letting up until a truce was agreed on. Nanny received 500 acres of land for her people that later became known as “Nanny Town.” The memory of Nanny is enshrined on the 500-dollar note of the Jamaican currency. She stands as a dynamic symbol of strength for the people of Jamaica, especially women.
